- The Best Scents For Your Home
Redfin recently reached out for pro tips for creating just the right mood for each room in your home using the power of scent!* 15 Tips from the Pros to influence the mood of any room Smell can play a huge role in influencing our mood. Just as certain paint colors can impact the way you perceive a room, fragrances can instantly elevate and set the room's tone. While many of us turn to candles, diffusers, and scent machines to waft aromas throughout our living spaces, there are some scents that are best suited for different parts of the home. To help kick off your home fragrance journey, Redfin reached out to experts from Denver, CO , all the way to Regina, SK , to get their recommendations and best tips on how to make your house smell amazing. Here are the best scents to use in different spaces throughout your home: Make every room in your house smell and feel amazing. The best scents for the living room: neutral with hints of freshness and warmth 1) Comfy and cozy or fresh and clean. Your home aroma options are endless with essential oils. Diffusing ultra comforting and stress relieving essential oils like Geranium, Frankincense, or Clary Sage will create a cozy and relaxing environment for your living room. Or try a fresh and clean combo of purifying and invigorating essential oils like Ravintsara, Peppermint, Lemon, or Grapefruit to a diffuser in your entryway to elevate the mood and welcome your guests! Using essential oils not only make the air smell fresher, they actually help reduce airborne microbes! Take a deep breath of these therapeutic aromas, sit back, and enjoy! - By Topsy Blends, Rachel London, Certified Aromatherapist 2) Destress with relaxing coniferous essential oils. Forest bathing is the Japanese practice of relieving stress by spending time immersed in the sounds and scents of nature. If you’re not able to escape the urban jungle for a trip to the forest, bring the relaxing scents of the outdoors in by diffusing coniferous essential oils such as juniper, pine, spruce, fir, and cypress in your home. Breathe deeply and imagine yourself bathed in the fresh forest air. - Shannon Bachorick 3) Soft lavender, woodsy sandalwood, or warm vanilla. Want to turn your home into a zen, aromatic haven but have kids running the roost? Open a tub of Aroma Dough for your little ones infusing your home with rich, relaxing natural aromas of soft lavender, woodsy sandalwood, or warm vanilla. As the kids squeeze the playdough – the natural essential oils are infused into the air, bringing your home the zen you "knead". - Aroma Dough 4) Incorporate versatile and refreshing lemongrass scents. Feeling anxious or on-edge? The scent of lemongrass can help calm your nerves, release tension, and reduce anxiety. Lemongrass candles have a light, refreshing fragrance similar to fresh lemons or limes and blends well with other soothing scents like chamomile, lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus. - National Candle Association 5) Bring the outdoors in by using scents that remind you of your favorite outdoor places. Scent is directly connected to memory and emotion, so bring back the memories of salty waves and sandy toes with scents like Ocean Driftwood and Sunny Daze. -Connect’d Candles The best scents for the kitchen: bright citruses & cozy spices 6) For sanguine and choleric types - a blend of sage, chamomile, or ylang-ylang would help relax, while melancholic and phlegmatic individuals would use rosemary, coffee, ginger, and eucalyptus. Aside from helping with your temperament, scents tend to evoke subconscious memories that we are seldom aware of. The cinnamon blend will most likely bring up childhood memories, while the Christmas tree and birch will most likely set your mood for holidays. When it comes to picking the best scents for your home that can perfectly fit one's desired objectives and individual preferences, you have to keep in mind that general rules are more for guidance than for strict following. Exploring oneself through scents may help establish a unique relationship with them that lasts a lifetime and fill in any temperaments' shadows or even downfalls of life's roller coasters. - Hazelwood Soap Co. 7) Scent, emotion, and memory are deeply and intricately intertwined, which is why the rich scent of ginger and cloves brings back precious moments of coziness. It's a reminder of the start of a new chapter while watching the moody weather outside bundled up with loved ones indoors. And since so many autumn memories are created in the kitchen, what better place to ignite a pumpkin spice latte candle? - Kobi Co. 8) Lemon essential oil is one of the most versatile oils in your kitchen. Not only does it have antibacterial properties, but its fresh fragrance can freshen up any room. Lemon oil also has many uses for cleaning, such as removing dirt and grime from kitchens or multipurpose sprays that are great at getting rid of grease on a stovetop. - Vinevida The best scents for a bedroom: woody and relaxing florals 9) Unwind with woody and musky scents. Create a calm, safe, and sensual bedroom atmosphere with earthy tones like Sandalwood, Ozone, or Amber. These woodsy, sometimes musky, fragrances are calming and comforting and inspire positivity to help you feel better instead of just making you drowsy. We recommend our Black Sea or Tobacco & Bay Leaf candles. - Mountain City Candles 10) My most recommended scents are lavender and jasmine. When you choose a scent to use in your bedroom, whether you use candles, mist, or diffusers, you want to ensure that these fragrances help you rest and relax to have a better quality sleep. - House Fragrance 11) Soft amber or black currant. Introducing the warm hues of amber or the floral and woody notes of black currant into a space offers a surprisingly soft bouquet perfect for evoking a tranquil mood. These notes, especially when blended, bring a harmonious aura to the room embodying peace and repose. -Blue Jar Candle 12) Calming, neutral, and earthy scents are essential for grounding yourself in your space. Bamboo, Coconut, and Pacific Woods are great options for turning your bedroom into your personal retreat and are gentle enough that everyone can enjoy them. - Unhinged Craft Candles 13) Incorporate dry diffusing essential oils in eucalyptus, cedar, or lavender for a relaxing oasis. Dry diffusing is one of the sweetest, safest, and simplest ways to enjoy the aroma of essential oils. The scent releases naturally: no heat, no power source, or special equipment required. A folded handkerchief with 6-drops of Eucalyptus oil tucked in your pocket makes a pleasant reminder to breathe deeper. Sweeten the bathroom with cedar, soften the mood with lavender under the pillow, or frost and freshen your shoes with a drop of cooling peppermint. Virtually any absorbent medium such as fabric or paper will do but beware that oils can stain. - Circle Green 14) Try a blend of lavender and white tea . Hard day? Grab your favorite book, light your bedroom candle, get cozy in your favorite soft plush blanket, and enjoy the relaxing "Serenity" aroma. It’s the perfect blend of lavender and white tea, ideal for creating a serene environment. - Petals & Wicks 15) To set the perfect mood for your bedroom, think of fragrances in 3 categories: relaxing, romantic, or refreshing. For romance, try jasmine, amber, or sandalwood. For relaxation, try bergamot, lavender, or chamomile. For refreshing, try eucalyptus, mint, or vetiver. The best scents for the bedroom are going to be different from the scents you'd use in the kitchen or other shared spaces in your home, so it's important to consider the mood you're trying to set in each space. - Candelaria Candles *Originally published by Redfin
- Ultimate Guide to Self-Care Products for 2025
Self-care is the practice of honoring yourself through love, acceptance, and rest. It’s an intentional act to preserve your mental, spiritual, and physical well-being. Because we are all individuals, self-care looks different for everyone—but one thing remains the same: when you take care of yourself, you thrive. The best self-care practices go beyond routines and rituals; they involve using high-quality, natural products that nourish your body from the inside out. Let’s dive into the ultimate self-care guide for 2025, featuring organic, toxin-free products that help you achieve balance, restoration, and wellness. Why Self-Care Matters According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. This can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.” Incorporating self-care into your daily life isn’t about escape—it’s about purposefully creating space to recharge, refocus, and show yourself the care you deserve. When you prioritize self-care, you bring more balance and energy into everything you do. Self-Care Practices to Incorporate into Your Routine Before diving into products, let’s go over essential self-care practices that help build a well-rounded routine. Daily & Weekly Exercise The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity . Exercise releases endorphins, reduces stress, and boosts your overall well-being. Prioritizing Restful Sleep Sleep is the foundation of health. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “If we sleep too little, we become unable to process what we’ve learned during the day and have more trouble remembering it in the future.” Quality sleep helps your body restore itself physically and mentally. Conscious Rest & Mindfulness Intentional rest allows your body and mind to reset. Try pairing moments of stillness with frankincense essential oil or our Palo Santo Liquid Smudge —a grounding, restorative aroma perfect for meditation and relaxation. Practicing Gratitude Gratitude shifts your mindset. Writing down one thing you’re grateful for each day can improve emotional well-being. Pair this practice with an uplifting essential oil like Rainbow Zest to enhance positive energy. Nourishing Your Body with Whole Foods What you put into your body fuels your energy, mood, and overall health. Prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods that support gut health, immunity, and vitality. Nourishing Your Body with All-Natural Products Just as mindful eating fuels your body from the inside, the products you use on your skin should nourish and protect you on the outside. Choosing organic, all-natural self-care products is a powerful way to honor your well-being, ensuring that what you absorb is as pure and beneficial as possible. Many conventional products are filled with synthetic chemicals that can do more harm than good, as anything applied to your skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream, where your liver must work to filter out toxins—adding unnecessary strain to your body's natural detoxification process. But nature provides us with clean, toxin-free alternatives that support our health and radiance. Treating yourself to high-quality, natural ingredients is an act of self-love—because you deserve nothing less. - Stay Cool with Essential Oils!
Essential Oils for cooling you and your space on hot summer days We are in the thick of summer and some of us are really feeling the heat- especially those of us without A/C in our houses! 3 tips to cool down you and your space down on hot summer days. Tip # 1: Diffuse with Cooling Essential Oils! Cool down your home by diffusing essential oils with cooling therapeutic properties. Try diffusing any of the following essential oils to refresh, uplift, and add some cooling comfort to your space: 🌿Geranium 🌿Lemongrass 🌿Eucalyptus 🌿Peppermint 🌿Lavender This is so wonderful to give yourself a nice, calming cool after a long day and is particularly helpful to cool down right before you go to bed, or just as refreshing when you wake up. Not to mention, diffusing these essential oils will help purify your space! Add 15-20 drops of straight essential oil to your diffuser (or per your diffuser's instructions) and feel the cooool. Tip # 2 • Throw in the Towel If your room is extra hot, try soaking a hand towel in water and add a few drops of soothing lavender , then place it in the freezer. When you are ready for bed, take it out and press it against your chest, face, and neck as you lay down. Be sure to take deep inhalations of the relaxing lavender essential oil. Though you might think the icy towel would wake you up, this actually helps lower your body’s temperature and will calm your mind with the soothing scent, and will prepare your body for a good night’s rest. Tip # 3 • Aromatherapy Sprays If you want the super simple solution for a full body cool down, try spritzing your Sunrise Mint or Lavender Rose Water aromatherapy sprays on the back of your neck, back of the knees, and on the face! I love doing this before I head out the door and after I come home from a long day of markets. Whichever method you decide to use, stay cool out there. :) Your neighborhood aromatherapist, Rachel ♥
- Reviving Dry Winter Skin
Our skin requires different care and attention throughout the seasons. It does such a good job protecting us day in and day out that we can thank it by simply treating it with all-natural skincare ingredients and paying attention to what it needs throughout the year. In the cooler months, we are either indoors hovered around our fireplaces, blasting our heaters, or spending time outside in the cold air. With low humidity, the dry indoor heat or brisk winter air zaps our skin’s natural oils, leaving us with dry or dull skin. Here are some helpful tips to revive and rejuvenate dry, cracked, or dull winter skin! Moisturize More! We can rejuvenate dry, cracked, or dull skin by adding in more all natural body and face moisturizers throughout the day. Moisturize Right Before Bed Applying moisturizer is especially helpful to use at night right before bed. While we sleep, our cells are busy at work. By using a face antioxidant serum , organic face cream , hand, foot and body lotion or oil before bed (or all of them!) our body can slowly absorb them into our skin to hydrate all throughout the night without having to worry about protecting us against the outdoor elements and pollutants. Cleanse Less and Use Cool or Warmer Water in the Winter Months To keep the moisture our skin naturally produces healthy and happy, it also helps to cleanse less in the winter months. If you usually wash your face twice a day, try only washing with a gentle cleanser once at night before bed. After cleansing, swap your morning routine with just cool or warm water, a face cream , and/or all natural sunblock . If you usually wash your face once a day, try skipping a day by washing with just cool water and amp up your moisturizing. Though, do remove all makeup before bed. In short, moisturize moisturize moisturize! Keep that beautiful glow all year round with your all natural skincare routine , eat high-antioxidant foods, drink plenty of water or tea, consume foods with high omega-3 fatty acids, and apply natural face serums, antioxidant creams , and hand and body lotions in the morning and at night, and as often as you like to revive dry winter skin. Feel free to email me with any questions or guidance about your particular skin type! Wishing you a very happy and healthy winter, Rachel

- 4 Essential Oils to Make Today a GREAT DAY!
Motivate even when all you want is to curl up under a blanket Here we are post-holidays, in the midst of winter, and it's dark and rainy outside. It can be hard to motivate when you want to just curl up with a blanket with a warm cup of tea. Mmm, that sounds nice right about now! But alas, regular busy life continues. "Girl's gotta eat!" So we muster up the energy to go to work, get the groceries, do the laundry, stare at clean laundry in bin for 3-4 days, and eventually put clean laundry away only to find it's already time to do laundry again. Hopefully, your life is more exciting than the laundry cycle, but you get my drift! We don't wanna do these things...but we must. The next time you are needing a little extra motivation, here are your essential oil allies to make today a happier day: Peppermint! Of course. An oil most all of us know and love. Peppermint essential oil is highly energetic and helps refresh and alert the mind. Perfect to start the day or for mid-day lulls. This is a great essential oil to diffuse or inhale if you are focusing on a creative project that needs your full attention. Big fan of Peppermint! Ginger. A warming oil that ignites a fire in your spirit! This is another essential oil that encourages energy and the willpower to tackle your to-dos with more ease. Diffuse or inhale Ginger's strong, spicy aroma to get a jumpstart on your to-dos. Ginger makes a perfect oil to use in the wintertime with it's warming and immune-supportive properties. Kick the colds away with Ginger essential oil! Grapefruit. Grapefruit's sweet and sparkling aroma exudes a sunshiney disposition. If you battle with the seasonal blues, Grapefruit is your BFF. It's a happy oil that is well-known to combat tension and depression. It helps soothe stress and uplift the mind and body. Inhale straight from the bottle, or diffuse to purify your space. Rosemary is known as a central nervous stimulant. It has a strong herbaceous aroma that encourages mental clarity. It can help increase alertness and liveliness. Rosemary has even been known to increase cognitive performance. (Moss, M. and Oliver, L. (2012). Inhaling or diffusing Rosemary is a great oil to use anytime you need to focus your attention on a task. Boosts energy, uplifts the spirit and helps improve concentration and retention of information. If you are often on the go, or work in a space with others who are sensitive to scent, the Sniff & Smile Aromatherapy Inhalers are a perfect pocket-sized tool to use. You truly just sniff...and smile! Two of my favorites to use on busy work days are the Time to Focus inhaler and Pick Me Up inhaler. Time to Focus is blended with organic, therapeutic essential oils of Rosemary, Peppermint, Vetiver, and Lemon to help aid concentration, refresh and uplift the mind, and to increase alertness. Pick Me Up is blende d with Peppermint, Ravintsara, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Orange essential oils. Perfect to use first thing in the morning when you wake up, before exercising to maximize your workout, if you are in a mid-day slump, or whenever you need a happy, energizing pick me up. If you are curious how aromatherapy inhalers work, watch this video below! I hope using these essential oils throughout your busy days helps you power through your to-dos with more ease and enjoyment. Wishing you peace & productivity, Rachel, your neighborhood aromatherapist

- Hydro-Aromatherapy - 5 of the Best Essential Oils to Soak In and 3 Different Ways to Use Them!
Essential Oils for the Bath Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, is known to have claimed that the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day. Sounds pretty dang nice to me! Sign me up for that. (Now I just need 2 more hours of free time every day and a lifetime of free massages.) Busy schedules and lengthy to-do lists often get in the way of self-care time. Dedicating a few hours a week to treating yourself to an at-home Spa Day can do wonders for an overworked mind and body. A Spa Day could include yoga, journaling, or meditation in addition to skincare rituals. Gotta give some love to both the mind and body. With baths on the mind, I wanted to share 5 of the best essential oils to soak in. Choosing the best essential oil for your bath depends on personal scent preference and the benefits you’re seeking at the time. Here are 5 excellent essential oils for your next bath: Lavender Essential Oil - Renowned for its calming and relaxing effects, lavender is excellent for reducing stress and promoting better sleep. It can also help soothe sore muscles and relieve tension. Eucalyptus Essential Oil - With its refreshing and invigorating scent, eucalyptus essential oil is commonly used to clear the sinuses and alleviate respiratory issues like congestion and coughs. It can also provide a cooling sensation and relieve muscle aches and pains. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil - With its sweet, floral scent, ylang-ylang is often used for its mood-boosting and aphrodisiac effects. It can help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting feelings of joy and relaxation. A little goes a long way with Ylang Ylang’s strong aroma. Frankincense Essential Oil - Frankincense has a warm, resinous “woodsy” aroma that’s known for its calming and skin-healing benefits. Adding frankincense oil to your bath can help promote relaxation, reduce stress, and ease anxiety. It’s a prized essential oil for use in meditation and spiritual practices as it helps create a sense of peace and helps promote mindfulness. It’s an excellent choice for sensitive, irritated, or dry skin as it deeply nourishes skin as you soak. Sandalwood Essential Oil - Sandalwood has a rich, woodsy aroma that is known for its calming and grounding effects. Adding sandalwood oil to a bath can help promote relaxation, reduce stress, and ease anxiety, making it an excellent choice for unwinding after a long day. It also helps soothe irritated or inflamed skin. In addition to the physical benefits of a warm soak, baths can be an excellent way to get quality alone time to clear your mind, meditate, and release built-up tension and stress. How to add essential oils to a bath: When preparing a bath, you'll likely be using more carrier oil compared to a topical application, as you want to disperse the essential oils throughout the bathwater effectively. It's important to mix the essential oils with a small amount of carrier oil before adding them to the bathwater. This helps to prevent the oils from floating on the surface and reduces the risk of skin irritation. Since heat and steam amplify the effects of essential oils, you will want to use about 5-6 drops of oil per ounce of carrier oil of your choice (like olive oil or coconut oil). You can also add Epsom Salts or Pink Himalayan Salts to increase the physical tension-releasing benefits of your soak! No tub? No troubles. Hydro-Aromatherapy soaking without a bathtub For those of us without a tub, foot soaks in a large bowl can offer many of the same benefits as a full body soak because our feet still absorb the salts and essential oils through the skin through a process called “transdermal absorption.” And of course, you can still bask in the therapeutic aromas. Outdoor foot soaks are one of my favorite summer pastimes. Sit back, plop your feet in the warm aromatic waters, soak up the scents, and enjoy your silky soft feet! Be sure to dilute essential oils into a carrier oil of your choice. Dilute your oils as you would for a bath using the above guidelines. Not enough time in the day for a soak? Try an Aromatherapy Shower! If you’re not much of a soaker, you can also use essential oils in the shower! Simply add a few drops of essential oils to the shower floor (out of the direct stream of water) and let the shower steam do its thing. Peppermint or Eucalyptus essential oil makes for a great energizing morning shower and Lavender or Cedarwood are perfect to destress and relax the mind before bed. A hot aromatherapy shower can reduce stress and anxiety, soothe tension, provide respiratory support, and clear the mind. Take a look at the full line of therapeutic essential oils here! If you’re not one to DIY, try Topsy Blends Spa Day Tranquility Bath Set Or, Treat your Feet with the Self Care Aromatherapy Set to Soothe, Soak, and Soften. - The Art of Wintering: A Seasonal Guide to Self-Care with Essential Oils
Transform Winter Blues into Winter Bliss with Aromatherapy Inspired by the wisdom of nature, "wintering" is the practice of slowing down, nurturing oneself, and finding beauty in the quiet moments. I find this time particularly beneficial post-holidays. With fewer social demands and societal pressures, January can be one of the most beneficial months for mental health- if you give yourself permission to rest and rejuvenate. Bold statement , I know! Especially with darker, shorter days that most people associate with gloom and grief... But I believe the cold months offer coziness, a time of personal reflection; and of course, self-care. January invites us to embrace the art of “wintering." For assistance along our wintering journey, aromatherapy is here to support our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Let’s dive a little deeper into our aromatherapy allies… 6 Essential Oils for "Wintering" and Why They Work Frankincense Known as the "King of Oils," Frankincense is grounding and calming. - Stay Healthy! How to boost your immune system, naturally.
Essential oils to support your family’s health Health and wellness- what a hot topic right now. I’m here to share easy-to-implement ways to support you and your family’s health using essential oils. NATURE'S MEDICINE Essential oils, herbs, and healthy foods all offer incredible all-natural immune support. I recommend utilizing all of nature’s medicines for full-body health, but today we will focus on the power of essential oils. Essential oils are extremely potent plant allies that can be used throughout the household in an assortment of ways to help boost immunity. Not to mention they help relieve stress and help calm the mind and body in the process. I don’t know about you, but my household has needed extra, extra help with stress relief these days! It’s a wild world out there. Essential oils are heavily concentrated plant matter made up of dozens of natural chemical constituents. Some plants carry specific chemical compounds that can help support the immune system in different ways. Essential oils for your immune system When life give you lemons . Lemons have many valuable compounds, but 2 of the most important ones are called "y-terpinene" and "d-Limonene". The y-terpinene is an antioxidant and the d-Limonene helps activate white blood cells and can help us fight off infections. It's also an antibacterial oil! So having these compounds that are antioxidants, antibacterial, antimicrobial, etc. in their super-concentrated form of Lemon Essential Oil can help support our immune system.(1) Clove Bud. Clove can also help stimulate the immune system based on its high percentage of "eugenol" which has an effect on interleukins that regulate cell growth and are particularly important in stimulating immune responses. This one compound has been known to be antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. Pretty powerful stuff and especially helpful as anti-infectious agents! (2) Those are just 2 examples of a long list of oils that support the immune system. All plants carry different compounds or different percentages of them. Only some oils have immune-boosting properties. Some of my favorites to use are Tea Tree , Eucalyptus , Lavender , Lemon, Peppermint, Clove Bud, Orange , Sandalwood, and Vetiver. Use essential oils to support your family’s health • Diffusing - So easy! Just add essential oils to your diffuser to purify the air you breathe. (Each diffuser has it’s own recommendations as to how many drops to use while diffusing). Not only does this purify the air, but it also supports our respiratory health. Need a diffuser? Check out some beautiful diffusers. • Inhalation - Also super easy! You can simply inhale directly out of the bottle, or use an aromatherapy inhaler. Whenever we smell something, the molecules travel throughout our body through our blood. This is an excellent way to also support respiratory health, preventing and aiding illness, and for mood-boosting or calming the mind and body (depends on the oil!). • Topically - Essential oils can be used topically. Whatever we apply to our skin makes its way to our bloodstream, so be extra cautious about what you are putting on your precious skin as it is our biggest organ that protects us! But we can use this to our advantage because we can apply diluted oils to our skin to support our immune system and smell great while doing it! Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Lavender are excellent skin-nourishing essential oils that also support the immune system. Add up to 12 drops of oil to every ounce of a carrier (water, oil, lotion) to apply to the skin for daily use. (Recommended for adults. For children add up to 6 drops per ounce of carrier oil.) • Clean with them! A fantastic way to boost immunity is to rid your home of germs and nastiness while also using essential oils that are antimicrobial AND immune boosting! Just about all citrus oils carry the d-Limonene molecule which has antimicrobial benefits. By using these to clean, we are naturally removing bacteria and microbes that could potentially enter our internal system that then may cause issues to our health. Using citrus oils like Lemon and Sweet Orange to clean not only disinfects your home, but it’s safe for the environment, boosts your mood, and of course, supports your immune system. *More to come on this topic soon! Stay tuned! So there you have it! Easy peasy Lemon Squeezy! (Had to say it.) You can find all of these organic, therapeutic essential oils HERE , and find immune-boosting products! Questions? Comments? Please let me know! Feel free to email me at topsyblends@gmail.com for more information. Stay healthy out there! - Practicing the Art of Rest with Frankincense Essential Oil
"If you don't make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness." - Unknown. Rest is imperative to good health. Most of us do not get enough quality relaxation. If experiencing a cancer diagnosis has taught me anything, it’s that you have to listen to your body. You have to rest. You have to self-soothe to calm your mind. A calm mind is what allows us to open up to the healing process. My brother sent me this astute passage by Thich Nhat Hanh from his book The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching: The Art of Rest This goes hand in hand with the popular quote: "If you don't make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness." Whether you're facing an illness, or running full steam ahead with a jam-packed schedule, it is of the utmost importance to give yourself time in the day to do absolutely nothing. If you're like me, resting is a challenge. I have always taken pride in working hard, being productive, and being on the go. Many of us are raised with the mentality that if you work hard, you can play hard, but only for 2 days a week! Then back to the grind. This is unnatural, and it takes a while to undo this ingrained sense of pressure to be "on" all the time. Aromatherapy can be an excellent tool to help rewire the brain to help practice the art of rest. Taking a moment to take deep inhalations of a calming essential oil like Lavender, Clary Sage, or Frankincense can help center the mind, release pent-up emotions, and bring your attention to the present moment. When you're looking for a sense of calm, use your sense of smell! Our sense of smell immediately affects our limbic system (the part of the brain that's involved with emotional and behavioral responses) and can help us whenever we need by using calming and stress-relieving tools like soothing Frankincense Essential Oil. Frankincense is one of the most grounding, calming, and restorative essential oils there is. Frankincense has been used since at least 1500 BC for a myriad of uses like purification, embalming, fragrance, and most notably, as medicine. For emotional support, Frankincense helps us quiet the mind to allow mental space for introspection. It encourages emotional healing on all levels and helps support tranquil, focused attention. In addition, for physical support, Frankincense is an effective pain reliever, immune supporter, has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, and is a renowned skin and wound healing oil. When mental or physical stress comes around, diffusing or applying Frankincense topically is a soothing remedy to help restore balance and peace from the inside out. To help ground and nurture the mind: Add Frankincense to your diffuser Apply topically by adding up to 12 drops of oil to your favorite carrier oil Or, inhale directly out of the bottle. You can also use a handy tool, like the Zen Blend Aromatherapy Inhaler for stress and anxiety relief. It's a perfect pocket-sized companion to take with you wherever you go to help encourage deep breathing when stress hits. Great to use at work, at home, or wherever life takes you. I hope you take some You-time today to rest, rejuvenate, and enjoy this we get to live! Questions? Comments? Please feel free to reach out using the contact box below! I always love to hear from you.
- Making Self-Care A Happy Habit
Being a well-rounded healthy human comes with the fragility of balance. To find our healthy mind/body balance more easily, we need to make self-care a habit instead of an afterthought. If we aren’t used to nurturing ourselves, self-care can seem like work. If it isn’t already part of our daily routine, it takes conscious, diligent effort to create and stick to healthy habits to maintain homeostasis of both mind and body. Throughout the day we have to take care of our needs, along with our family’s needs, our work’s needs, and if you are an empath, you may even take on your community’s needs, the world’s needs… No wonder we are stressed out so easily! We humans are creatures of habit after all! Once habits are part of our daily life, they are not a chore, they are not something we resist doing, they just become naturally part of our life. We will likely start to enjoy our new self-care habits and once we find a rhythm and routine with it, it’s hard to go about our day without them. This is the goal for self-care. Make it part of who we are. Part of our daily rituals. The more we take good care of ourselves, the easier it is to care for others without it feeling like a chore. What is self care? Any activity that makes your life better is considered self-care. This can be as simple as doing laundry, washing and moisturizing our face, meditating, reading, watering our houseplants, doing a puzzle… this is self-care. It does not have to be a full-blown spa day with massages or an hour long bath, though those are oh-so-lovely. In fact, small acts of self-care actually make more of an impact to reducing daily stresses. The Peace of a Daily Routine Once we create more self-care related habits, we fall into a routine. Routines, just as the sun rises and sets, are natural. Once we have our healthy routines, we may find it easier and easier to fall asleep at night, wake up and work out, take care of our skin, eat healthily… Once in place, healthy habits will start to transpire into all aspects of our life. No matter where you are at in your journey, take a few minutes to add one new self-care act into your daily life. Set your mind on it! If you are extra busy, it might be helpful to even set a reminder on your phone to make sure it comes up on your to-do list. Try this Simple One Minute Ritual Take a deep breathe in through your nose, filling your belly — and out through your mouth. Do this 3 times, just focusing on your breathe. Breath is the most valuable resource we have to navigate through stress . It’s always in our control, and by focusing solely on how deep our inhales and exhales are, stress can melt away. You will come out of that minute feeling better than you went in, I promise! Add Easy Aromatherapy And since you know how much I love aromatherapy, I have to add that using the Zen Blend inhaler as a meditation, self-care, breathing, stress-relieving, and balancing tool is one of the easiest and handiest pocket-sized blessings to have around when you need a moment for just you. “One conscious breath in and out is a meditation.” - Eckhart Toll Use the inhaler as a reminder to take deep, nourishing breaths and set your self-care intentions. Soon enough with mindfulness, these good intentions will naturally become happy habits and you will move through life with more ease and enjoyment. Next time you get flustered or feel stuck, remember to just breathe. Keep giving yourself these gentle reminders and overtime, you'll find you need to remind yourself less and less because you have created your happy habits and are living a life well balanced. ♥ Sending you all the best wishes today and always, Your neighborhood aromatherapist, Rachel
- Holiday Feast with Digestion Peace
How essential oils support healthy digestion With the holidays around the corner come the delicious meals, drinks, then the desserts…and then the cycle repeats. It's all gravy, until the gravy fights back. My absolute favorite digestion support is the Tranquil Tummy Digestion Aid Roll-On. Tranquil Tummy is a blend of digestion supportive essential oils that are acclaimed for soothing inflammation, muscle relaxation, reducing gas and bloating, reducing nausea, soothing a queasy belly, and also supporting stress relief. With a warming blend of Nutmeg, Cardamom, Fennel, Ginger, Peppermint and Sweet Orange, this topical roll on is so handy to have through the holiday season. “How does applying essential oils topically help my digestion?” I'm SO glad you asked. : ) Topically applying certain digestive supportive essential oils , like Nutmeg or Ginger, allows for a targeted, localized effect. The skin is permeable and essential oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Once absorbed, the therapeutic compounds in the essential oils can exert their effects on the body. Certain digestive-supportive essential oils like Peppermint encourage a healthy flow of energy throughout your body. This can help everything move smoothly through your belly and create a refreshing detox effect if you overindulge in rich food. In addition, there are numerous studies which confirm Peppermint oil’s anti-inflammatory actions, specifically of use in the gastrointestinal system to help with irritable bowel syndrome and colitis. (1) It has been proven to relieve gastrointestinal spasms, abdominal pain, and acts as a smooth muscle relaxant in the colon. (2) Many people find that Peppermint and Sweet Orange essential oils can relieve constipation, cramps. Nausea and vomiting.(3) Essential oils like Cardamom can help aid digestion by promoting the secretion of digestion juices and enzymes, easing digestive upset and bloating, and improving overall digestive system health. For the best digestion support, here is a visual how to apply the Tranquil Tummy roll-on: For additional benefits, as you are applying the topical solution to your stomach area, you are also inhaling the aroma which can help promote relaxation and stress release. A blend of these essential oils diluted properly and applied topically like the Tranquil Tummy for digestion is much more safe to you and your gut lining than internally consuming essential oils, and it works like a charm for those times when we eat just a little bit too much… Tranquil Tummy is perfect for ages 6 & up! - Cultivating Self-Care • 4 Pillars to Embrace Self-Love
A guide to self care - nurturing yourself, opening the heart, and encouraging balance within. When Rachel, the lovely aromatherapist and creator of Topsy Blends, asked me to write about self-love, I was thrilled! But as I sat down with my favorite raspberry tea and my diffuser running, I didn’t know where to start. Isn’t self-love often like that? Something we know we need but struggle to begin. Sound familiar? I decided to focus on one step at a time. With my favorite self-love essential oils diffusing around me, I embarked on the journey of writing about inner love—and I hope this inspires you to do the same. To get us going, here is a handy resource for using essential oils for self love. >> Depending on what you need, this list will help guide you to oils that help nurture, open the heart, and encourage balance within. What is Self-Love? At its heart, self-love means valuing yourself—flaws, strengths, and all. It’s about treating yourself like you’d treat your best friend: with kindness, compassion, and care. Self-love is not about perfection or selfishness; it’s about progress and showing up for yourself every day. Self-love takes form in practices like setting boundaries, prioritizing well-being, and recognizing your worth without relying on external validation. It’s both a mindset and an ongoing practice. And while it may not always feel easy, it’s always worth it. Looking Inward When you’re able to love yourself and embrace your inner joy, that radiates outward and impacts others. Establishing self-care habits helps build that deeper connection with yourself—leading to the love you deserve. So how do you achieve this? It’s a tricky question, especially with Valentine’s Day approaching. Instead of focusing on external displays of love, let’s use this time to recenter ourselves in self-love. Once we do, we can more fully share our love with those around us. Here’s the thing: self-love doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not something you achieve once and never revisit. It’s a daily practice. Self-love means devoting yourself to you, showing up even when it’s hard. When you do something kind for someone you love, like gifting a friend their favorite self-love essential oils (I’m a sucker for a good gift, can ya tell?), it creates joy for both of you. Now turn that kindness inward. That’s self-care. Establishing routines with intentionality can lead to a love that feels as natural as breathing. Looking Outward When you love yourself truly, deeply, and passionately, you have the capacity to share love with those around you! Whether with a partner, family member, friend, or your community, self-love allows your joy to multiply and touch others. It’s a beautiful cycle. 4 Pillars of Self-Care This Valentine’s Day, let’s turn our focus inward. Here are four key values of self-care to help you deepen your self-love practice. 1. Intentionality Self-love is achieved by practicing habits with intentionality. Self-care should meet both your needs and wants—and only you truly know what those are. The first step is taking intentional time for yourself. Put distractions away and reconnect with yourself. This can look like: Meditating or journaling Creating art or taking a bath Gardening or going for a hike Diffusing self-love essential oils like Geranium, Patchouli, or Ylang Ylang (available from Topsy Blends!) Making yourself a cozy, homemade meal Using eco-friendly skincare like The Great Omni Oil , which protects and nourishes your skin naturally Whatever you do, try saying aloud, “I’m doing this to show myself love and care,” and notice how it feels. 2. Gratitude One of the easiest ways to begin practicing self-love is through gratitude. You can write it in a journal, speak it aloud, or even jot it on the back of a grocery list. Try this prompt: Today, I’m grateful for ________. What came to mind? Gratitude softens the heart and helps you notice the beauty in the little things. You can also practice gratitude with loved ones by sharing three reasons you’re grateful they’re in your life. Joy is contagious! 3. Environment Your space has a significant impact on how you feel. Creating a safe, comforting environment is a key part of self-love. Rachel’s aromatherapy blog has an amazing guide on essential oils for balance and calm. I highly recommend checking it out and using those oils to create a space that supports you. Whether it’s through diffusing oils, adding them to a bath, or using them in body care like Topsy Blends’ Great Omni Oil , immersing yourself in natural, nurturing aromas can work wonders for your well-being. 4. Groundedness When you feel grounded, you feel at home in yourself—no matter where you are. Tools like essential oils can help guide you back to that grounded state. For instance, I use The Great Omni Oil (The GOO)when I’m traveling. Rubbing a little on my neck and breathing in its calming aroma helps me recente r. ...Can you tell I am a HUGE fan of The G.O.O. ? ;) It is my go-to for just about everything! Find what grounds you and make it part of your routine, whether it’s through scents, affirmations, or quiet moments of reflection. Self-Love Every Day This Valentine’s Day, give yourself permission to pause and practice self-care. Diffuse oils for self love, take a deep breath, note your gratitudes, and shower yourself with kindness. If you’re unsure where to start, simply slowing down can be the first step. When you look inward, you create the capacity to radiate love outward. It’s an honor to write for Topsy Blends and share my experiences with natural, heart-centered self-care. Here’s to more love—for yourself and the world around you. Xo, Tiff McIntyre
